Alternative Routes To The Island As Third Mainland Is Shuts Down

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the maintenance work on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State. The Third Mainland Bridge is a major route that links the mainland to the island.

The repairs on Africa’s longest Bridge will take off on Friday 24th July. There are fears of major gridlock occurring due to limited options of alternative routes for commuters accessing the island during the period of repairs.

Here are the alternative routes to consider as the bridge undergoes repairs.

  1. Ikorodu Road: if you are coming from Ikorodu road, you can go from:  Ketu/Ojota down to Fadeyi; Through Funsho Williams Avenue to Apongbon/CMS
  2. Through Jibowu/Murtala Muhammed way to Oyingbo/Iddo/Carter Bridge
  3. Lagos/ Abeokuta Express/Agege Motor Road: Go from Toll Gate through Oshodi, Mushin to link Funsho Williams Avenue to Apongbon/CMS.
  4. Gbagada Expressway from Berger or Ketu through Ojota Bridge/Ogudu/Carwash connect Gbagada Express to Anthony: Link Ikorodu Road connect Funsho Williams Avenue to Apongbon/CMS. Also, through Oshodi connect Agege Motor Road to link Funsho Williams Avenue to Apongbon/CMS

Ferry option for Ikorodu residents is available, they can make use of the Ikorodu ferry terminal which can transport them in a 30-minute boat ride to the Victoria Island or Ajah area of Lagos Island. If you are living in Victoria Island or Ikoyi, you can use alternative routes such as Eko Bridge or go through Iddo-Carter Bridge. You can now take Herbert Macaulay. Other inner roads are also available. You can also go through Adekunle, Glover, and the side roads. Motorists can make use of Costain. We will make efforts to make the roads motorable during this six months as already stated by Lagos State Government.

If you are entering the Lagos Island from Okokomaiko, Festac, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, you may consider taking Ajegunle via Marine Bridge to Ijora. This will enable you connect to Carter Bridge and then Apongbon into Lagos-Island

Take note that motorists making an exit from the Lagos-Island are expected to ply Eko Bridge and Carter Bridge into Mainland, while those in Lekki and Ajah can also make use of Epe axis through Imota into Ikorodu.
