AC Milan and its owners RedBird Capital Partners have announced that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be joining the club’s executive team as a senior advisor. The legendary Swedish striker will join AC Milan in a multi-role advisory capacity, drawing on his vast expertise from an accomplished playing career in Italy.
In a statement, the American investment firm RedBird Capital Partners verified that the 42-year-old football legend will be involved with the team in several capacities. The development of players, high-performance training, increasing AC Milan’s worldwide brand, and bolstering its commercial interests will all fall under Ibrahimovic’s purview as manager. The construction of the club’s new stadium is one of several strategic initiatives in which he will be instrumental.
Ibrahimovic is also a “Operating Partner” for RedBird’s entertainment, media, and sports investment portfolio. He will be assisting RedBird’s portfolio firms with finding and assessing new investment opportunities, as well as providing advice on commercial projects, digital content strategies, and strategic brand-building activities.
After a turbulent playing career marred by injuries and a record-breaking March goal against Udinese for Milan, Ibrahimovic finally called it quits at the end of the previous season.
When he returned to Milan in 2019 as a seasoned forward, he was instrumental in the club’s comeback, which led to their 2022 Serie A championship. Following a time of inactivity and financial difficulties, the club had a dramatic turnaround with this achievement.
While Ibrahimovic has won league titles in France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands, his greatest European achievement came in 2017 when Manchester United won the Europa League.
Upon his return to AC Milan, the club is in a precarious position in Serie A, nine points behind leaders Inter Milan and maybe eliminated from the Champions League before the season even begins. The team will likely look to Ibrahimovic for guidance since he brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the table.
