During a meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) in Japan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky compared the destruction in Bakhmut to the aftermath of Hiroshima following the atomic bomb attack. Zelensky dismissed claims that Russia had captured the frontline city.
Zelensky, speaking at a news conference, remarked that the pictures of Hiroshima were reminiscent of the devastation in Bakhmut and other Ukrainian towns. He described the scenes as having “nothing alive left” and all buildings in ruins.
There are conflicting reports regarding the control of Bakhmut. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of the Russian private military group Wagner, claimed on Saturday that they had captured Bakhmut after months of intense fighting and would hand it over to Russia later in May.
However, Zelensky asserted during the conference that as of Sunday, Bakhmut remains under Ukrainian control, with Ukrainian soldiers present in the city. He emphasized Ukraine’s determination to continue the fight.
While the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) stated that they were countering Russia in Bakhmut and making progress in the suburbs, making it difficult for the enemy to hold the city, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly congratulated the completion of the operation to “liberate Artemovsk” (the Soviet-Russian name for Bakhmut), as reported by Russian state news agency TASS.
