Soap Opera Star Remembered for Iconic Roles and Conservation Efforts
Wayne Northrop, a veteran television actor best known for his role as Roman Brady on the soap opera Days of Our Lives, has died at the age of 77. His death was confirmed by his publicist, Cynthia Snyder, who revealed he passed away at the Motion Picture and Television Fund’s Woodland Hills Home, an assisted living facility for film industry veterans.
Northrop had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for the past six years, which necessitated his move to assisted living care.
Family and Tributes
Northrop’s wife, actress Lynn Herring, released a heartfelt statement, sharing that he passed away surrounded by loved ones. She expressed gratitude to the Motion Picture and Television Home for their care during his final years.
“He took his final breath in the arms of family,” she wrote, thanking the facility for their support and compassion.
Northrop is survived by his wife of 42 years and their two sons, Hank and Grady.
A Storied Career
Born in 1947, Northrop’s acting career began in the late 1970s with small roles in popular TV series like Baretta and The Waltons. He gained widespread recognition in 1981 with his portrayal of Michael Culhane in the pilot and subsequent episodes of the hit show Dynasty.
His most iconic role came on NBC’s Days of Our Lives, where he played Roman Brady and Dr. Alex North across 1,036 episodes from 1981 to 2006. His portrayal of Roman Brady became a staple of the soap opera, earning him a place in the hearts of fans worldwide.
Northrop also appeared in other television shows, including Port Charles, The Young Riders, L.A. Law, Hotel, and Cold Case.
A Life Beyond Hollywood
Outside of acting, Northrop and his wife purchased a working cattle ranch in California in the 1980s. A passionate advocate for wildlife and conservation, Northrop dedicated much of his life to environmental causes.
