The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, 2023–First Series. In a statement issued by the Head of the National Office of WAEC in Nigeria, Patrick E. Areghan, it was revealed that out of the 8,348 candidates who sat for the exam, 4,161 were male while 4,187 were female, representing 49.84% and 50.16% respectively.

Areghan also stated that the results of 413 candidates, which is 4.95% of the total number of candidates, are being withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice. He further explained that the cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the Council for determination in due course. Candidates who sat for the exam can check their results on the WAEC website at www.waecdirect.org.

According to Areghan, the analysis of the statistics of the candidates’ performance shows that 2,960 candidates, representing 35.46%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects (with or without English and/or mathematics), while 2,003 candidates, representing 23.99%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English and mathematics.

Areghan also mentioned that among the candidates who sat for the exam, 27 candidates had varying degrees of special needs, including eight visually challenged, two with impaired hearing, and four albinos. However, he assured that all these candidates were adequately provided for in the administration of the examination.

In conclusion, Areghan advised all candidates who sat for the exam to check their results carefully and take necessary actions as required.
