The office of United States Vice President Kamala Harris announced on Monday that she is scheduled to visit Africa later this month, making her the most senior official from the Biden administration to visit the continent.
This move comes as the administration aims to strengthen relationships with African countries, in light of Russia and China’s growing influence in the region.
In a statement released by Harris’ press secretary, Kirsten Allen, it was stated that the Vice President’s trip aims to “strengthen the United States’ partnerships throughout Africa and advance our shared effort on security and economic prosperity.” Harris and her spouse, Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, will travel to Accra, Ghana; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; and Lusaka, Zambia from March 25 to April 2.
The visit is expected to build on the recent U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit hosted by President Biden in Washington in December 2022. Harris will work with African governments and the private sector to expand access to the digital economy, support climate adaptation and resilience, and strengthen business ties and investment, including through innovation, entrepreneurship, and the economic empowerment of women.
During the trip, the Vice President will meet with President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, President Samia Hassan of Tanzania, and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia to discuss regional and global priorities, including democracy, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, food security, and the effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Harris will also engage with civil society, including young leaders, business representatives, entrepreneurs, and members of the African Diaspora to strengthen people-to-people ties.
