The University of Ilorin has suffered significant damage to its facilities due to windy rain. The affected areas include the Network Operating Centre (NOC) mast, which houses internet radios, various lecture halls, computer-based test centres, electric poles, academic staff union secretariats, and several other buildings.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), expressed sadness over the incident but was glad that it happened during the Federal Government’s directive to shut all universities for the 2023 General Elections. He stated that the consequences would have been more severe if the students were present on campus.
Professor Egbewole acknowledged that the damage to the facilities would affect the activities of staff and students, especially researchers who require the internet facility for their academic work. He assured stakeholders that the damaged facilities would receive immediate attention and restoration.
The Director of Computer Services and Information Technology (COMSIT), Professor Dupe Ademola-Popoola, confirmed that the destruction of the mast would impact internet access across several parts of the campus. She explained that the mast housed several access points that distributed internet wirelessly, and many of these were destroyed during the incident. As a result, some areas of the campus would not have wireless internet access until repairs were completed.
The Acting Director of the Physical Planning Unit, QS. Toyin Jimoh, stated that some of the damaged facilities required maintenance.
