Hollywood actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry has pledged to support 93-year-old Josephine Wright in her legal battle to retain ownership of her Hilton Head home in South Carolina, which her family has owned since the Civil War era.
Wright is currently in a legal dispute with Bailey Point Investment Group, which reportedly wishes to purchase Wright’s land. However, Wright has refused to sell, leading Bailey Point to file a lawsuit to seize control of her property.
Upon learning of Wright’s situation, Perry voiced his support via Instagram, citing a quote from Wright: “‘I’ve pretty much been a fighter all my life’ said 93-year-old Josephine Wright. Well, that makes two of us. Ms. Wright, please tell me where to show up and what you need to help you fight.”
Although it remains unclear whether Wright and Perry have been able to connect directly, Wright has been actively defending her rights in the media. In an interview with local news outlet WSAV-TV, Wright labeled Bailey Point’s lawsuit as “frivolous”.
According to Wright, Bailey Point received approval to develop 29 acres of land situated behind her home and subsequently offered to buy her property. After she declined their offer, Wright alleges that the company began harassing her and then filed the lawsuit. Wright explains that her family has owned the property since 1861, the start of the Civil War, and that her ancestors escaped slavery and were liberated by Union soldiers.
