The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) has reported that two individuals lost their lives, and several others were injured when a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus carrying Lagos State Government workers was hit by a Lagos Mass Transit Train owned by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in the Shogunle region of Lagos on Thursday.

Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, said in a statement that the cause of the accident was the reckless driving of the BRT driver, who attempted to beat the traffic signal before the train collided with the bus.

LASEMA stated, “Upon the arrival of the response team from the agency at the incident site, it was discovered that a Viale BRT bus with an unknown license plate and a train were involved in a mishap at the address specified above. The investigation discovered that the accident was caused by the BRT bus driver’s reckless driving, as he attempted to beat the train traffic signal before the moving train hit the BRT bus.”

According to the statement, several injured victims were given first aid treatment by LASEMA’s medical team (paramedics) and LASAMBUS officials, stabilized, and then transported to LASUTH Ikeja’s trauma center for further treatment. At the accident location, the agency’s LRT at Cappa, along with LRT at C3, LRU paramedics at C3, Onipanu, Cappa, LASAMBUS officials, the Nigeria Police Force, LASTMA, LNSC, and Nigerian Army were among the responders present.
