Donald Trump has declared that he would not drop out of the 2024 presidential race, even if he were to be convicted of a felony. The 76-year-old Republican is currently facing 34 felony counts in New York for allegedly paying hush money to an adult film actress.

During his first major interview since his recent arrest and arraignment, Trump said that he would “never drop out” and maintained that President Joe Biden, who is 80 years old, is not fit to run for office again.

The interview was conducted by Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson and aired on Tuesday, with part two expected to air on Wednesday. Trump stated that nothing would prevent him from running in the 2024 election, not even a conviction. He said, “It’s not my thing. I wouldn’t do it. I don’t see how it’s possible. It’s not an age thing…I don’t think he can. I just don’t see Biden doing it from a physical or a mental standpoint. I don’t see it.”

Trump and other senior Republicans have repeatedly questioned Biden’s mental acuity and apparent frailty. However, Trump’s interview with Carlson comes after texts emerged in which Carlson disparaged Trump after his election loss. The messages were revealed as part of a $1.6 billion lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems against Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News over its coverage of Trump and his allies’ unsubstantiated claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election.

One of the text messages sent by Carlson two days before the Capitol riot reads, “We are very, very close to being able to ignore Trump most nights. I truly can’t wait.” The interview with Carlson took place weeks after these texts were made public. Despite the controversy, Trump remains steadfast in his commitment to running for president in 2024.
