In a joint operation, the Nigerian Army troops of the 63 Brigade, the police, and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) successfully eliminated two members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The ESN is the paramilitary organization of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
According to a statement released on Tuesday by Onyema Nwachukwu, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, the confrontation occurred on Monday in the vicinity of Fuji Junction, located in the general area of Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
The troops swiftly responded to a distress call alerting them to an attack by ESN fighters on the community.
The army spokesperson confirmed that the operation resulted in the apprehension of five members of the group. Additionally, the security forces successfully seized a significant cache of weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, a pump-action semi-automatic rifle, 15 live cartridges, an AK-47 rifle magazine, and a Baofeng radio receiver.
“The terrorists succumbed to the overwhelming firepower of the troops, after two of their members fell in the firefight that ensued, while the survivors fled to their hideout around the Okpanam river,” read the official statement.
Emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the security agencies and the public, Nwachukwu urged citizens to continue providing actionable information that can support efforts to combat security challenges in the region.
He further quoted Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, commending the combined efforts of the troops and encouraging them to maintain their synergy as they work toward restoring peace and tranquility in the area.
The successful operation against the ESN fighters in Delta State marks another significant achievement by the Nigerian security forces in their ongoing efforts to curb insurgency and maintain law and order across the country.
