OGUN STATE, Nigeria – In a devastating road accident that occurred along the Abeokuta-Lagos highway on Tuesday night, a police officer lost his life while on duty. The Ogun State Sector of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) confirmed the incident, attributing it to a speeding truck owned by a local firm.
According to Florence Okpe, the FRSC spokesperson in Ogun State, the crash near Saiten Petrol Station resulted in injuries to five other individuals. The accident involved a total of nine vehicles, including a Dangote truck, a tipper truck, a yellow bus, an armored tank, a Toyota RAV4, and three motorcycles.
Providing further details, Okpe disclosed that eight individuals were affected, comprising seven adult males and one adult female. Four males and one female sustained injuries, while two individuals emerged unharmed. Tragically, one person lost their life in the accident.
The FRSC attributed the crash to excessive speeding and reckless overtaking by the driver of the Dangote truck. The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, colliding with other vehicles from the rear before careening into a nearby river.
As a result of the impact, the Toyota RAV4 caught fire, which was subsequently extinguished using a fire extinguisher from a nearby filling station. Unfortunately, several motorcycles involved in the incident were burnt.
The injured victims were promptly transported to the General Hospital in Ota for medical treatment. Among them was a police officer who had been on duty at the time of the accident. Despite the FRSC rescue team’s efforts to save his life, the officer succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ogun State, expressed condolences to the families of the victims. He emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and encouraged all motorists to prioritize safety on the roads.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the need for drivers to exercise caution and abide by traffic rules to prevent further loss of lives and property. The FRSC continues to work tirelessly to promote road safety awareness and reduce the occurrence of accidents across Ogun State.
