On Thursday, 23rd March, 2023, a tragic accident claimed the lives of 25 people while 10 others sustained injuries. The accident occurred on the Hadeja-Potiskum Federal highway at Udubo, in Gamawa LGA of Bauchi State. The vehicle involved was a commercial Ash color Toyota Hummer bus with the registration number JMA.

According to the Federal Roads Safely Corps (FRSC) report from the Azare/Gamawa Station Office of the Bauchi State Command, the accident occurred at 16:30hrs and was reported at 16:38hrs. The FRSC personnel arrived at the scene at 16:50hrs, which took them 12 minutes to respond.

The report signed by DRC A I Mohammed for the Unit Commander, RS 12.11 Azare, stated that 35 people were involved in the accident. Among them, 25 individuals were confirmed dead, including 9 male adults, 11 female adults, 2 male children, and 3 female children, while 10 male adults were injured.

The possible cause of the accident was attributed to overloading (OVL), speed limit violation (SPV), Tyre burst, and loss of control (LOC). Although the road was in good condition, these factors may have contributed to the fatal crash.

The FRSC disclosed that 24 of the victims were inside the vehicle, while 11 were outside under a tree close to a car wash, as stated by the NPF. The injured victims were immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Azare for medical attention, while the deceased were transported to Hadeja in Jigawa state for burial.

The incident underscores the need for strict adherence to road safety rules and regulations, particularly in the areas of overloading, speed limit compliance, and vehicle maintenance. It is a sad reminder of the devastating consequences of recklessness on the road and the importance of taking road safety seriously.
