On Monday, there was chaos and commotion in the Jos Central business area, commonly referred to as Terminus, when a stray bullet from a police officer hit a trader in the midst of a clash between commercial motorcyclists and law enforcement agents. According to eyewitnesses, the unfortunate incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when police officers were attempting to enforce the ban on motorcycles within the Jos metropolis in order to bring order to the commercial area.
As part of the enforcement, the police impounded a motorcycle belonging to one of the commercial motorcyclists, leading to an altercation between the police and the motorcycle operator. As other commercial motorcyclists joined the fray, pandemonium erupted in the area. In an attempt to disperse the crowd, police officers fired gunshots into the air, which inadvertently hit a trader, killing them instantly.
The incident caused confusion and panic in the vicinity, with traders and other individuals fleeing and hastily closing their shops. When the Tribune Online visited the scene of the incident, the police had already taken control of the area to restore peace.
In a statement, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident and promised to provide more details before the end of the day. The tragic incident highlights the need for law enforcement agencies to exercise caution and restraint in the discharge of their duties and to ensure that innocent civilians are not harmed. It is also crucial for commercial motorcyclists and other road users to abide by traffic regulations to avoid endangering their own lives and the lives of others.
