Tiwa Savage Reveals Why She Left Mavin Records For Universal Music Group

Tiwa Savage, Nigerian singer, says the deal with Universal Music Group (UMG), her new record label, was all she ever wanted as her music will be distributed to over 60 countries.

The gifted singer, who appears to be on a quest for global dominance, said this during an interview on Arise News.

She said joining the music group is also an opportunity for Afrobeat music to thrive evenly alongside other international genres of music.

“It is just like a natural progression in your career when you conquer your country, then your continent, then the next thing is world domination,” said Tiwa.

“Basically it is having that opportunity to be able to distribute my music to over 60 countries and just being part the Universal Music Group global with Rihanna and other A-lists artistes internationally… is having that opportunity to have afrobeat music have the same opportunity other genres have.”

She noted that a couple of music labels approached her for a record deal but only UMG measured up to her expectations.

“A few labels have approached me and we have meetings with a couple of them, but towards the end of last year, I believe that Universal Music seems to get my brand and medium then we went back and forth between lawyers. I am really happy with the deal I got because there were really certain things I was fighting for and I got them eventually,” the singer said.

The ‘All Over’ singer recently exited Mavin Records for the US music company that boasts of artistes like Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga.

Don Jazzy, Mavin’s CEO and record producer, had described Tiwa as his favourite business partners “of all time” despite leaving his label.
