TikTok CEO Kevin Mayer resigns

Kevin Mayer, CEO of TikTok, has called it quits with the Chinese-owned video app just three months after his time with them.

The company recently sued the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump over his executive order effectively banning it in the country.

Reacting to the development, TikTok revealed in a statement that Mayer will be replaced by U.S. General Manager Vanessa Pappas on an interim basis.

Mayer’s resignation comes as the app attempts to convince both the United States and India that it is not a security threat as many allege, while at the same time holding discussions with interested buyers after a second U.S. order demanding the sale of its operations in the country.

Before heading TikTok, Mayer was the top streaming executive at Walt Disney. His time at the Chinese-owned company also saw him become the chief operating officer of parent ByteDance.

In his letter to employees, Mayer said:

“In recent weeks, as the political environment has sharply changed, I have done significant reflection on what the corporate structural changes will require, and what it means for the global role I signed up for.

Against this backdrop, and as we expect to reach a resolution very soon, it is with a heavy heart that I wanted to let you all know that I have decided to leave the company.”
