According to TMZ, Harvey Carignan, a notorious mass murderer known as “The Want-Ad Killer,” has passed away. Carignan used advertisements to lure unsuspecting women whom he raped and murdered using a hammer. He died in a Minnesota prison earlier this month due to natural causes, as confirmed by the authorities at MCF-Oak Park Heights.
Harvey Carignan was convicted in 1975 for the murders of Eileen Hunley and Katherine Schultz, for which he received a life sentence. During his trial, Carignan claimed that God had instructed him to “kill whores and harlots” and pleaded insanity. Despite his plea, he was found guilty.
Eileen Hunley disappeared in Minnesota in August 1974, and her body was discovered five weeks later. Her skull was crushed by repeated blows to the head, and she had been raped with a tree branch. On the other hand, Carignan admitted to the Schultz murder. He had picked her up in South Minneapolis in September 1974 and driven her to a rural area where he killed her. Her badly beaten body was found in a cornfield, and her skull was also crushed with a hammer, leading to Carignan’s infamous nickname, “Harvey the Hammer.”
Carignan committed his first murder in 1949 when he was in the army and stationed in Anchorage, AK. He was found guilty of killing 58-year-old Laura Showalter during an attempted rape and served part of his sentence at Alcatraz before his release. Although he was only convicted of three murders, Carignan is believed to have killed at least five women.
At the time of his death, Carignan was 95 years old.
