The Lagos State government has issued a temporary closure of Chrisland School in Opebi-Ikeja following the death of a student, Whitney Adeyemi.
The state Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, made the announcement and stated that the closure was for the purpose of conducting a full investigation into the matter.
On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Adefisayo expressed condolences to Whitney’s parents and called for calm as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
The incident occurred during a school sporting event last Thursday and there are conflicting reports as to the cause of Whitney’s death, with some students claiming she was electrocuted by a naked wire from a cotton candy machine while the school’s management states she simply slumped in public view. Whitney’s father has stated that legal action will be taken against the school. The exact cause of Whitney’s death remains under investigation.
