A group of suspected herdsmen reportedly invaded a public secondary school in Oyo State on Thursday morning, leaving students and teachers injured. The incident occurred at the Community Grammar School in Alaropo Nla, in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
According to eyewitnesses, more than twenty herdsmen entered the school premises with their cattle and began grazing on the crops grown on the school farm. When the students and teachers tried to drive them away, the herdsmen allegedly attacked them with swords and machetes, leaving some with serious injuries including broken legs and hands.
The school principal, Mrs Grace Alamu, confirmed the incident and said that it had been reported to the police. She added that officers were on their way to the school to investigate.
Efforts to reach the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, to confirm the invasion were unsuccessful as calls to him went unanswered.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of students and teachers in Oyo State and highlights the ongoing conflict between farmers and herdsmen in Nigeria. Many have called for the government to take urgent action to address the issue and ensure the safety of citizens.
