On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Nigeria added Lagos, Cross River, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Sokoto, and Katsina states as plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging the decision of the Federal Government to cease the use of old Naira notes (N200, N500, and N1000) as legal tender in the country.
Previously, only Kaduna, Kano, and Zamfara states had filed the suit, with the Attorney-General of the Federation as the sole defendant.
However, Edo and Bayelsa states requested to be included as defendants. The court ordered an amendment of the Originating Summons and adjourned the hearing until the following Wednesday. Although the court refused to extend the ex-parte order prohibiting the FG from implementing the new monetary policy introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria, it cautioned all parties not to take any action that might impact the lawsuit’s subject matter. During the proceedings, the governors of Kogi and Kaduna states were present in the courtroom.
