The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially announced that June 28th will be observed as Eid al-Adha, a significant religious festival in Islam.
This announcement was made by the Sultanate Council Sokoto on Sunday evening through a statement issued by the national moonsighting committee.
Eid al-Adha, commonly referred to as Sallah, is a momentous occasion in the Islamic calendar that involves the sacrifice of a ram. It is also known as the “festival of sacrifice” and holds great religious significance for Muslims worldwide.
The festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, Isma’il (Ishmael), as a demonstration of his unwavering devotion to God.
According to Islamic tradition, as Ibrahim was about to carry out the sacrifice, God intervened and provided a ram as a substitute.
Eid al-Adha follows the conclusion of Ramadan and marks the second major religious celebration in Islam. The first is Eid al-Fitr, which signals the end of the holy month of fasting.
In the statement issued by the Sultanate Council Sokoto, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar extended his heartfelt greetings to the Muslim Ummah in advance of Eid al-Adha.
“The Sultanate Council Sokoto has declared Monday 19/June/2023 as the first day of Zul-Hijjah 1444 AH. Accordingly, Wednesday 28/June/2023 will be the day of Eidul Adha 1444 AH,” the statement reads.
“His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa‘ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, wishes the entire Muslim Ummah happy Eidul Adha Mubarak in advance.”
