South African retail company Shoprite has responded to the news making the rounds about their purported exit from Nigeria.

According to the new report, Shoprite is not planning on leaving the country soon as they have just opened to Nigerian investors.

The denial comes from County Director for Chastex Consult, Ini Archibong, who spoke with Vanguard in a telephone conversation, saying:

We have only just opened to Nigerian investors which we have also been talking to just before now. We are not leaving, who leaves over a $30billion investment and close shop?

It doesn’t sound right. We only just given this opportunity to Nigeria investors to come in and also help drive our expansion plan in Nigeria. So we are not leaving.

I have tried to say this as too many people as I can. There should be no panic at all and all of that. There is no truth in that report.”

News of Shoprite leaving Nigeria had circulated the internet this morning and Twitter users had reacted to the development, lamenting the exit of the company which some of them said would lead to many Nigerians becoming jobless.
