Seun Kuti, Son of Fela Kuti, Charged with Assault on Police Officer in Lagos

Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has been arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command on charges of assault. The arraignment took place before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun at a Magistrate’s Court in the Yaba area of Lagos State on Tuesday.

Seun Kuti, the son of late music legend Fela Kuti, was charged with assault on a police officer, which is an offense contrary to Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act. The prosecution, led by S. A Adebese, requested the court to remand the defendant for 21 days until legal advice could be obtained from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

However, the defense, led by renowned lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, pleaded with the court not to remand Seun Kuti, claiming that they were unaware of any remand application. The defense argued against his detention pending legal advice.

This legal development follows the circulation of a viral video showing Seun Kuti assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State, which emerged on Saturday. In response to the video, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, ordered his arrest. Seun Kuti voluntarily turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, on Monday. He was subsequently transferred to the state’s Criminal Investigation Department at Panti, Lagos.

The case will continue to unfold as the court decides whether to grant the remand application or release Seun Kuti on bail. As the proceedings progress, further updates on the matter will be provided.
