On Monday, security forces prevented a demonstration in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, protesting the shortage of new naira notes, fuel and electricity. The protesters had gathered in front of the University of Ibadan, carrying signs criticizing the naira swap policy.
Law enforcement agencies including the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, army, and Amotekun Corps stationed 15 patrol vans in front of the university to maintain order. The protesters were prevented from blocking the road and eventually dispersed.
Com Lekan Adisa from the “Take it Back Movement” in Oyo State stated that the security presence was intimidating, with more officers than protesters. He also emphasized that the movement was not affiliated with any political party and accused the government of using the situation as an excuse to hide their mistakes.
In a separate incident, the protesters had caused unrest in parts of the city on Friday, targeting innocent residents with dangerous weapons such as cutlasses, axes, and cudgels. The demonstration resulted in bonfires, barricades, and destruction of police stands at various intersections.
