The US deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein meeting with Donald Trump on Monday, September 24, 2018 has been postponed to Thursday 27th September 2018 after a long conversation between the duo. Rosenstein met with chief of staff John Kelly and spoke with Trump, who is in New York.
The meeting which was predicted to lead to either Rosenstein submitting his resignation letter or being fired by the white house was keenly followed all around the world.
The white house press secretary, Sarah Sanders said in a statement that “At the request of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, he and President Trump had an extended conversation to discuss the recent news stories. Because the President is at the United Nations General Assembly and has a full schedule with leaders from around the world, they will meet on Thursday when the President returns to Washington, DC.”
The resignation or sack of Rosenstein is expected to spark a public discussion. Rosenstein is the man responsible for overseeing Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 US presidential election. That’s because Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Rosenstein’s boss, recused himself from the probe after it became clear he’d provided false and misleading testimony to Congress about his own contacts with Russia.
The expectation that Rosenstein will leave the administration came after The New York Times reported he secretly discussed recording President Donald Trump and invoking the 25th Amendment to remove the President from office.
But GOP allies of Trump urged him to hold off on a purge of Justice Department officials until after the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
People familiar with the conversations said in the hours after the Times report, Trump questioned whether to fire him immediately. Rosenstein denied the Times report as “inaccurate and factually incorrect.”
“I never pursued or authorized recording the President and any suggestion that I have ever advocated for the removal of the President is absolutely false,” Rosenstein said in a later denial.
