Rivers State Governor Gives One-Month Deadline for Civil Service Promotions and Youth Employment
Nyesom Wike

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has given the State Civil Service Commission a deadline of one month to complete the promotion of civil servants at all levels in the state. The Governor issued this ultimatum on Monday while swearing in members of the committee.

He also tasked them with setting up the machinery for the employment of 10,000 Rivers youths into the State Civil Service, stressing that both exercises are non-political and must be completed within the next month.

The Commission was sworn in at Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday, with Sir Clifford Ndu Walter as Chairman, Venerable Richard Okpara, Barr. Osima Gina, Sir John Pascal Nali, and Chief Mike Elechi as members. Governor Wike warned the committee members against using their positions to witchhunt anyone, emphasizing the need for a thorough job to be done.

He explained that during a courtesy visit by the new Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) leadership in the State last week, he disclosed that the former NLC leadership was hostile towards the state and made meaningful discussion almost impossible. He stressed that employment into the State Civil Service must be done with every local government area being accommodated and reflected in the personnel to be engaged.

Governor Wike further urged the committee to set up the necessary machinery for the immediate employment of youths within the next month while warning against using the exercise to witch hunt anyone. He emphasized that the employment was not for companies but for the civil service.
