Nnamdi Kanu has been held in prison since 2021, after being first arrested on October 14, 2015. His arrest came after years of advocating for the establishment of a sovereign state of Biafra. While he was granted bail in April 2017, he was later remanded in custody prior to his trial in 2021.

Recent events have seen the Southeast region of Nigeria engulfed in chaos, with IPOB members unleashing mayhem in response to a compulsory sit-at-home order issued in July 2023. This order was intended to demand the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who remains incarcerated.

Taking to her Instagram page, Rita Edochie passionately appealed to the Federal Government to release Kanu, asserting that doing so would bring an end to the unrest in the South East.

In her heartfelt message, Edochie stated, “Release Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu today and see the unrest in the South East become history. Stop playing with people’s lives, especially all you elites. That your children are overseas and you are using other people’s children to create unrest. If you are one of them, your generation and generations to come will never no peace.”

The actress’s plea adds to the growing pressure on the Nigerian government to address the issue of Nnamdi Kanu’s detention.
As tensions continue to rise in the Southeast, the public eagerly awaits the government’s response to these calls for the release of the IPOB leader.
