Protesters Demand Electronic Transmission of Results in Nigeria's Presidential Election

A group of protesters, claiming to be members of various political parties, have demonstrated at the Presidential Collation Centre at the International Conference Centre in Abuja on Tuesday.

The group demanded that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fulfil its promise to use electronic transmission of results. The protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the use of written results, which they claimed did not follow the process, contrary to the Electoral Act, the INEC guidelines, and the promises made by the INEC chairman.

One of the protesters, Ilemona Onoja, stated that their major demand was for INEC to fulfill the promise of a transparent and open process. Onoja said the process should involve accreditation, voting, and ballot counting, which will be transmitted directly to a central server.

The central server would then be displayed on the day of the election at the national collation centre, where voters could follow the results.

The protesters alleged that INEC had not followed the promised procedure, and that the use of electronic transmission of results was not transparent. They claimed that 23 states still needed to be uploaded on the BVAS, an electronic process promised by INEC, and that some results were deleted from the platform after they had been uploaded. The protesters called on President Buhari to call the INEC chairman to order and ensure due process.

Dr Lovett Izekor, in her reaction, called on the international community, international observers, and democracy lovers worldwide to pressure President Buhari’s government to ensure INEC kept its promise of electronic transmission of results.
