President Donald Trump’s daily briefing on Monday, August 10, 2020, was interrupted by a shooting outside the White House, leading to the Secret Service calling the U.S. leader away from the briefing room.

NPR reports that it was later disclosed by the Secret Service that a uniformed Secret Service officer had shot a 51-year-old man who said he had a gun and pointed an object at the officer, taking a shooting stance. The officer fired his weapon, hitting the man in the upper body.

The suspect and the officer were both taken to hospitals but it wasn’t specified why the officer was taken.

The occurrence took place at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, near the White House complex and a statement stated that the Secret Service Office of Professional Responsibility will review the officer’s actions.

Washington D.C.’s police department has also been contacted to conduct an investigation into the occurrence.

Just a few minutes into President Trump’s late-afternoon press briefing, a Secret Service agent told him he needed to leave the room, and the doors to the briefing room were sealed with media personnel inside.
