In an unexpected revelation, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his strong desire to leave office promptly, citing his difficulty in coping with the mounting pressure surrounding him in recent times. With only six days remaining in his second and final tenure, the President arrived late to the Regimental Dinner held on Tuesday night at the prestigious Nigerian Armed Forces Officers’ Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, attributing his tardiness to the overwhelming pressure he has been facing.
President Buhari, who had a packed schedule for the day, including presiding over an extraordinary meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and commissioning various projects, offered his sincere apologies for his delayed arrival. He addressed the audience, stating, “Please, I will like to digress a bit from the prepared speech. I apologize most sincerely for keeping you waiting for about at least half an hour. Actually, I can hardly cope with the pressure, and I’m desperately looking forward to the next six days.”
During his speech, President Buhari expressed his gratitude for the sacrifices made thus far and took the opportunity to commend the armed forces, as well as other security and intelligence agencies, for their unwavering dedication and selfless service in ensuring national security. He implored them not to relent in their efforts to maintain absolute security throughout the country.
“Please permit me to use this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the officers and soldiers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their unwavering loyalty, hard work, dedication, and selfless service to our beloved nation. I’m fully aware of all your sacrifices and commitment to tackling the various security challenges and your contributions to the successful elections in our country,” President Buhari affirmed.
Acknowledging that the issue of insecurity remains a significant concern, the President emphasized the importance of the armed forces and security agencies remaining resolute in the face of these challenges. He assured them that, even as his administration nears its conclusion, the government will continue to provide the necessary support to enable them to effectively carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
President Buhari also took a moment to pay tribute to the fallen heroes, praying for the repose of their souls. He remarked, “Let me now pray for the repose of the souls of our fallen heroes. Their ultimate sacrifice will never be in vain. May the Almighty God continue to grant them eternal rest.”
The Regimental Dinner was attended by several distinguished guests, including Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, Mr. Tony Elumelu, Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Governor Godwin Emefiele of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), members of the National Assembly, and numerous other dignitaries.
As President Buhari’s tenure draws to a close, Nigerians await the next chapter in the country’s political landscape, eager to witness the peaceful transition of power and hopeful for a brighter future.
