The federal government has announced that 1.8 million vulnerable citizens have benefited from the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS) programme.
The announcement was made during the presentation of the 2022 report of the NPRGS in Abuja, chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.
The NPRGS was created to support the administration’s goal of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty within a decade. The programme is anchored on four pillars of macroeconomic stabilisation, industrialisation, structural policies and institutional reforms, and redistributive policies and programmes. The report indicates that the programme has had a significant impact on the lives of vulnerable Nigerians.
The report showed that 100 programmes have been completed under the NPRGS initiative, including the Agriculture for Food and Jobs Plan (AFJP) and the construction of rural roads.
The Agriculture for Jobs Plan has impacted 1.6 million smallholder farmers, while 13,000 youths in six states were trained under a technical and vocational education and training programme.
The report further revealed that over 8,000 Nigerians were employed in rural roads constructed under the rural roads programme, which built 40 rural roads covering about 57.3 km across the country.
Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba, who presented the report, confirmed that the direct beneficiaries of the programmes are 1.8 million “vulnerable Nigerians”, with a total of 9,527 Nigerians directly employed through the implementation of the programmes.
During the meeting, the committee approved the sum of N250 billion for the execution of projects for the year 2023.
The projects include the provision of 100,000 homes for low-income earners to create one million jobs directly and indirectly, the expansion of energy access by providing 1,200 solar street lights in rural communities and six mini-grids for high-capacity productive farming under the Solar Naija Programme, and the creation of 4.5 million direct and indirect jobs through the rural roads programme which targets to connect about 750 rural markets.
