The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has taken steps to ensure peaceful gubernatorial and state assembly elections in Gombe State scheduled for Saturday, March 18th, by deploying additional officers and men to the State Police Command. The move is aimed at boosting the Command’s strength to checkmate political thuggery and other related electoral offences.
The officers deployed are drawn from various units of the police, including the Police Mobile Force, Police Special Forces, IGP Election Monitoring team, and other tactical teams of the Force. Along with the additional personnel, the Command has also received operational assets such as operational vehicles, personnel protective gadgets, and anti-riot equipment to ensure adequate security during the elections.
To further improve the Command’s operational and conventional outfits, Armoured Personnel Carriers have been allocated from the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The Commissioner of Police, Oqua Etim, has directed the deployment and distribution of the acquired gadgets to Area Commands, Divisional Police Headquarters, and other tactical squads to effectively put them to use.
The CP has commended the officers for their efforts to ensure peaceful conduct during the presidential elections and urged them to replicate the same during the forthcoming gubernatorial elections, maintaining the police’s neutrality and apolitical stance in the electoral process.
In light of the recent developments, the CP is assuring the public to remain calm while warning troublemakers to stay away from causing problems during the polls. The Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, will ensure peaceful elections, allowing the people of Gombe State to exercise their franchise without intimidation or molestation. ASP Mahid Mu’azu U Abubakar, PPRO, has released a statement to this effect.
