Okupe had written to Obi on Tuesday indicating his decision to step down as the Director General of his presidential campaign council.

The former presidential aide decided to step down a day after a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja convicted him of money laundering allegations.

The LP chieftain was subsequently sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

But the presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, gave an option of N500,000 a fine on each of the 26 count charges, totalling N13m for which he was found guilty.

Doyin Okupe opted to pay a fine of N13 million to beat the 4:30 pm deadline.

He announced his resignation in a letter addressed to Peter Obi, LP presidential candidate, dated December 20, 2022.

Reacting Peter Obi said he respects his decision to step down as his campaign DG.

The LP presidential candidate, therefore, expressed hope that the legal system will eventually afford him an opportunity to clear his name.

“My Dear Elder Brother Doyin, I received your letter offering to step aside in order to avoid any distraction to the good work of trying to forge a new direction for our country, on board of which you have been from inception, Obi said. It is a decision which I respect.

The story of this historic effort, which has galvanized millions of our countrymen, particularly our youths, cannot be complete without mentioning your commitment, dedication, and the boundless energy that you brought to bear.

It is my sincere hope that our legal system will afford you an opportunity to eventually clear your name, Obi added.
