Peter Obi denies viral audio recording and pressure to leave the country

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has claimed that there is pressure on him to leave the country, as he accuses the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and some government agencies of attempting to divert the country’s attention from the infractions that marred the recent polls. In a statement on Wednesday night, Obi accused the APC of bringing unfounded allegations against him and trying to create distractions.

Obi spoke out about a viral audio recording in which he allegedly spoke to Bishop David Oyedepo of Winners Chapel. The tape has generated reactions, with Obi urging Oyedepo to act and support his ambition as a way to see that Christians win the “religious war” in the nation’s political sphere. However, Obi dismissed the recording as fake, saying that he never made such statements.

“The present attempts by the APC as a party, and the APC led-government through some government officials and agencies to divert our attention from our blatantly stolen mandate is unfortunate and sad,” Obi said. “These have come and continued to manifest in different ways, such as the malicious accusation of the Minister of Information, Mr Lai Mohammed, the circulation of a fake doctored audio call, and a pressure on me to leave the country.”

Obi reiterated that he did not say, think, or even imply that the 2023 election is, or was a religious war. He said that the attempts to create distractions were a ploy to cover up the infractions that marred the recent polls. Obi called on the APC and its officials to focus on addressing the issues that plagued the polls and ensure that the country’s democracy is upheld.
