Osun Government Slams Reno Omokri Over Wizkid Revenue Comparison

The Osun State Government has criticized former presidential aide Reno Omokri for comparing the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) to the proceeds from Wizkid’s recently released Morayo album.

Omokri had claimed in an online post that Wizkid’s album generated more revenue in two weeks than Osun State raised in IGR for the entire year of 2023.

Responding to the comment, Kosile Anike Stella, Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Revenue Matters, dismissed the comparison as “illogical” and “uninformed.”

Government’s Response

In a statement issued Monday, Stella argued that comparing a globally recognized artist’s earnings to a state’s revenue is akin to comparing “apples with oranges.”

“Wizkid’s audience is global, not limited to Osun State residents. It’s even a person who cannot think deeply that will make such a comparison,” she said.

Highlighting examples of other global earners, Stella noted:

  • Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi earn $213 million and $130 million annually, respectively, far exceeding the IGR of most Nigerian states.
  • Jon Rahm, the highest-paid golfer in 2024 according to Forbes, earned $218 million, more than the self-employed tax revenue of all Nigerian states combined since 2019.

“Does that mean Ronaldo, Messi, or Rahm should come to Nigeria to teach states how to generate IGR?” she questioned.

Revenue Growth in Osun State

Stella further emphasized the progress in Osun State’s revenue under Governor Adeleke’s administration:

  • A 9.7% increase in 2022.
  • A 13.5% rise in 2023.
  • A significant 46% growth in 2024.
  • Overall, the state has recorded an 82% increase in revenue since 2021.

“These figures reflect data-driven governance and strategic efforts to boost revenue. While Reno Omokri struggles with half-statements, Osun State continues to deliver measurable progress,” Stella added.

Broader Criticism

Stella accused Omokri of making “illogical arguments” to gain relevance, suggesting that his comments were aimed at riding on Wizkid’s album success for attention.

“Mr. Omokri’s inability to construct logical arguments since leaving political office is now glaring. He seems more interested in making controversial statements rather than engaging in meaningful discourse,” she concluded.
