In a recent development, leaders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide have appealed to the Federal Government for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The objective behind this request is to restore peace and tranquility in the Southeast region of the country.
The call for Kanu’s release was made during the inauguration ceremony of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Women and Youth Wings (FCT chapter) held in Abuja over the weekend. Speaking on behalf of the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Prof. Charles Nwekeaku stressed the crucial role Kanu’s freedom would play in achieving lasting peace in the Igbo land.
“What the Southeast region desperately needs is security and a stable environment. Even if the government appoints a hundred service chiefs, peace cannot be fully attained without the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu. His liberation is central and fundamental to establishing a peaceful mechanism in Igbo land,” Prof. Nwekeaku stated.
Furthermore, Iwuanyanwu called upon President Bola Tinubu to honor the judgment of the Appeal Court, which exonerated Nnamdi Kanu. He urged Tinubu to take prompt action in facilitating Kanu’s release, emphasizing that it would restore a sense of belonging among the Igbos. According to Iwuanyanwu, Kanu is a freedom fighter who has not committed any crime.
Meanwhile, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, the former governor of Anambra State and Chairman of the Igbo Elders Consultative Forum, reaffirmed the safety and favorable investment conditions prevailing in the Southeast region. Ezeife urged Igbos residing in other parts of the country to consider investing in their homeland.
Addressing the audience, Ezeife stated, “Now is the opportune time for our people in the Diaspora. Igbo land provides a conducive environment for investment, and therefore, they should return home and invest in our region.”
During the same event, Mrs. Kate Oguocha, the newly-inaugurated Chairperson of Ohanaeze Ndigbo (Women Wing) for the FCT chapter, outlined her plans and agenda. She emphasized the importance of mobilizing and organizing Igbo women to support the government’s efforts in delivering good governance and empowering women.
Mrs. Oguocha expressed her commitment to promoting women’s participation in governance and ensuring their active engagement in decision-making processes. Additionally, she highlighted the need to empower women economically and socially, enhancing their contributions to the development of the Igbo society.
The call for Nnamdi Kanu’s release by Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide leaders serves as a significant step toward establishing peace in the Southeast region. With the hope that the Federal Government will heed their plea, the Igbo community anticipates a brighter future, characterized by security, prosperity, and unity.
