The Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Charles Igwe, has announced that the Chairman of Cubana Group, Chief (Dr) Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, will deliver the commencement speech at the 50th convocation ceremony of the University. The announcement was made during the convocation press briefing at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, UNEC.
Prof. Igwe explained that Obi Cubana was selected to inspire the fresh graduands of the institution due to his impressive track record in business and the admiration that students have for him. He also stated that the choice of Obi Cubana was in line with current convocation trends around the world.
A total of 14,308 graduands will be awarded bachelor’s degrees, while 2,482 postgraduate degrees will be awarded to deserving graduands of the Institution. Of the 14,308 bachelor’s degrees, 246 graduands have earned First Class Honours degrees, 5,092 graduands will be awarded Second Class Honours (upper division) degrees, and 7,865 will be awarded Second Class Honours (lower division) degrees. Additionally, 1,088 graduands will receive Third Class degrees and 17 will earn Pass degrees.
Furthermore, 96 Diplomas will be awarded, comprising five distinctions, 52 merits, 37 credits, and two passes. On Saturday, March 25th, 2023, a total of 618 persons will be awarded the Doctorate Degree of the University, while 1,690 graduands will earn Master’s degree in various disciplines. Additionally, the Postgraduate Diploma of the University will be awarded to 174 persons. These figures represent significant improvements compared to the numbers graduated at the 49th convocation of the University.
During the convocation ceremony, four distinguished Nigerians will be conferred with Honorary Doctorate Degrees. Justice Mary Odili, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, will be conferred with the Doctor of Law (Honoris causa). The Doctor of Business Administration will be conferred on the Chairman of Hobark International Limited, Obiora Fubara Okoroafo, and the Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Ebenezer Onyeagwu. The Doctor of Public Administration will be conferred on the ex-Governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan.
Prof. Igwe also highlighted that several departments and programs have been successfully accredited by the National Universities Commission, NUC, while projects, completed and ongoing, have been executed by his administration.
