OAU Student Dies After Robbery Attack, Students Blame Management, University Hospital
A 300 level accounting student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Abiodun Babalola, died after being attacked by armed robbers in his hostel.

The university management in a statement released stated that “the year three student died as a result of injuries he sustained during an attack on the Adam and Eve hostel, an out of campus students’ residential hostel, along Parakin – Ede road axis of Ile-Ife.

The release also stated that the students were attacked in the early hours of Saturday with dangerous weapons by some unknown persons who inflicted varying degrees of injuries on them before carting away their money, phones and other valuables.

There have however been different reactions as regards the true cause of the death of the student. Majority of students of the university have claimed that negligence on the part of the university hospital led to the death of the student.

A student who pleaded anonymity said the boy was taken to the university health centre and later to the university teaching hospital where he was refused treatment because he had no ID card with him.

He said ” When Biodun was injured, we called the Police but they didn’t show up, eventually he was taken to the health centre where they later transferred him to the university teaching hospital. There, we heard he was denied treatment because he could not produce his ID card. Imagine that, he was bleeding so bad but he wasn’t treated”.

Other reactions have also trailed the death of the students on twitter with a trending hashtag #oaulivesmatter, where students and twitter users condemn the death of the student and share their ordeal with the security apparatus and university management in the past.
