The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced its plan to partner with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to deploy an Address Verification System (AVS) technology aimed at preventing the use of fake addresses to acquire national identity documents like National Identity Cards and driver’s licenses.

This development was revealed by the Commandant General of NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, during the celebration of the World Civil Defence Day.

The event, which coincided with the second year anniversary of Dr Audi’s appointment as the third substantive Commandant General of NSCDC, witnessed the parade of 429 suspects who were arrested for various offenses and are currently under prosecution in the courts of law.

Dr Audi, in his speech, stated that under his leadership, the Corps has upgraded its Infor

mation and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre with state-of-the-art facilities to address modern crime fighting challenges. He further stated that the Corps’ cyber experts have designed and deployed an Electronic Disaster Alert Monitoring Application to aid emergency response during fire, flood, and other crises.

In addition, during the recently concluded 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections, the Corps designed and deployed an Integrated Electronic Arrest and Reporting system (i-Ears) for classified communication of intelligence, documentation of report from Divisional Commands to the Commandant General via State Commandants, Confidential Inter-Agency Data Sharing, Emergency Threat Reporting, which was fully deployed to live stream and monitor the security situation across the country.

Dr Audi disclosed that the NSCDC is committed to fighting criminal activities such as vandalism, economic sabotage, and oil theft, using advanced technologies. In the last year alone, the Corps has arrested over 546 suspects, prosecuted 429, convicted 51, destroyed 71 illegal refineries, 22 illegal oil bunkering sites, impounded 134 trucks, and confiscated 36 boats and other equipment used in perpetrating illegal oil bunkering.

He concluded by reiterating the NSCDC’s commitment to becoming a world-class organization, leveraging on the experiences of other members of the International Civil Defence Organisation (ICDO).
