The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed deep concern regarding the planned nationwide protests announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
In an official statement, the police spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed the IGP’s stance, emphasizing the need for a peaceful approach to prevent the demonstrations from being hijacked by miscreants.
The IGP acknowledged the grievances raised by the labor unions and recognized the significance of constructive dialogue in addressing these issues. To foster understanding and reach common ground with the NLC/TUC leadership, the IGP has ordered the Commissioners of Police in charge of various commands, along with the supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to engage in fruitful discussions.
Adejobi stressed the importance of a coordinated and peaceful approach to achieve meaningful solutions and to prevent any violence or disruptions to public order during the protests. He assured citizens that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to ensuring their safety and security throughout the period of the planned demonstrations.
The police spokesperson issued a stern warning against any attempts by miscreants to exploit the situation for violent purposes, including vandalism, gangsterism, and extortion. The Police will respond firmly, professionally, and lawfully to any acts that threaten the peace and well-being of the country.
In preparation for the potential challenges posed by the protests, the Nigeria Police Force is fully ready to deploy all available resources to maintain law and order and protect the lives and property of citizens. The IGP called on all officers to remain vigilant, and professional, and uphold the highest standards of conduct during this period.
Emphasizing the importance of peaceful dialogue, the Police boss urged all stakeholders, including the NLC, TUC, and other civil society groups, to embrace constructive engagement to resolve their grievances. He assured that the Police are committed to providing a secure and conducive environment for open dialogue and mutual understanding, ensuring the seamless exercise of civil rights.
