The United States Government has said that none of its citizens was affected in the Tuesday Anambra attack on its Consulate staff convoy.

In a brazen act of violence, gunmen targeted a convoy of staff from the United States consulate in Anambra State on Tuesday.

Tragically, the attack resulted in the loss of lives and further highlighted the escalating security concerns in the region.

The incident, witnessed a horrifying assault on the convoy transporting US consulate personnel. Reports indicate that two police operatives and two consulate staff members tragically lost their lives in the attack.

To compound the heinous act, the assailants callously set ablaze the bodies of the victims.

Addressing the incident during a press briefing, John Kirby, the US spokesperson for the national security council, confirmed that no US citizens were among the casualties.

He stated, “I just got informed about a whole lot before coming out here to talk to you all. It does look like a US convoy vehicle was attacked. What I can tell you is that no US citizens were involved and therefore there were no US citizens hurt.

“But we are aware of some casualties, perhaps even some killed, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of where we are right now.” Kirby also mentioned that the state department was actively investigating the matter.

Similarly, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, Tobechukwu Ikenga, provided further details on the attack.

He confirmed that although four individuals tragically lost their lives, no US citizens were present in the convoy.

In an official statement, Ikenga stated, “The Joint Security Forces have embarked on a rescue/recovery operation in Ogbaru LGA, following an attack on a convoy of staff of the US Consulate today, May 16, 2023, by 3:30 pm along Atani, Osamale Road.

The hoodlums murdered two of the PMF operatives and two staff of the Consulate and set their bodies and vehicles ablaze. Also, the arsonist/murderers, on sighting the responding joint security forces, abducted two Police operatives, the driver of the second vehicle, and took to their heels. No US citizen was in the convoy.”

The incident in Anambra State is the latest in a disturbing series of attacks targeting security personnel, government facilities, and prominent individuals or organizations within the state. These recurring acts of violence have heightened concerns regarding the overall security situation in the region.

Authorities are working diligently to investigate the attack, apprehend the perpetrators, and implement measures to ensure the safety of all residents and foreign nationals within Anambra State.
