In a passionate plea, Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has called upon President Bola Tinubu to break the cycle of flagrant violation of the rule of law that marred the previous administration led by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Ejimakor took to Twitter on Monday, shortly after President Tinubu’s inauguration as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In his urgent appeal, Kanu’s lawyer implored President Tinubu to order the immediate release of the IPOB leader from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), emphasizing the need to deviate from the path followed by his predecessor. Ejimakor tweeted, “Dear President Bola Tinubu: I have an urgent request: Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, today or tomorrow. Don’t drag it. Don’t inherit Buhari’s misguided animus, hubris, and his infamous disdain for the rule of law and for Ndigbo. Chart your own path. Thank you, sir!”
Nnamdi Kanu has been held in detention since June 2021, facing charges of terrorism brought against him by the government. However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja recently struck out the terrorism charge, asserting that Kanu’s extradition from Kenya to Nigeria for trial was conducted unlawfully.
The decision of the appellate court dealt a significant blow to the government’s case against Kanu and cast doubt on the legality of his detention. With this ruling, it becomes increasingly crucial for President Tinubu to consider the plea made by Kanu’s counsel and address the concerns surrounding the rule of law in the country.
As the leader of the nation, President Tinubu has the opportunity to set a new precedent and demonstrate his commitment to upholding the rule of law. By considering the release of Nnamdi Kanu and ensuring a fair and just legal process, the President can signify his determination to foster unity and justice within the nation.
The call for Kanu’s release has gained traction among supporters of the IPOB leader, who believe that his continued detention is unjust. As the new administration takes shape, all eyes are on President Tinubu to see how he will navigate this critical issue and forge his own path, separate from the practices of his predecessor.
It remains to be seen how President Tinubu will respond to this urgent appeal, but many Nigerians, especially those supporting Nnamdi Kanu and the IPOB, eagerly await a decisive and just course of action from the new leader.
