In the midst of an ongoing nationwide strike by the Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) that has now entered its second week, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), representing the collective voice of all doctors in the country, has made a fervent appeal to the Federal Government. The appeal, issued on Tuesday, urgently implores the government to expedite measures that would effectively address the contentious issues at the heart of the dispute.
Under the banner of the NMA, the overarching organization overseeing the interests of medical practitioners, Dr. Uche Ojinmah, the President of the NMA, expressed deep concern over the prolonged labor disagreement. Stressing the importance of safeguarding the rights and welfare of NARD members, Dr. Ojinmah underscored that the protracted dispute has regrettably extended to a point where its repercussions are being felt by ordinary citizens across Nigeria.
Delivering a press statement on behalf of the NMA, Dr. Ojinmah articulated the organization’s stance: “We firmly believe that the protracted nature of this labor dispute is adversely affecting the lives of the common Nigerian citizen. We beseech our Government to promptly address the areas of disagreement and avoid resorting to punitive measures that could exacerbate the situation and disrupt the fragile balance of industrial harmony.”
Dr. Ojinmah further urged NARD, the resident doctors’ association spearheading the strike, to exhibit a gesture of goodwill towards the government, taking into consideration the plight of patients and fellow citizens who are grappling with the consequences of the ongoing healthcare disruption. He appealed for a united front to overcome any perceived or genuine obstacles obstructing the speedy resolution of the dispute, emphasizing that a unified effort stands to uplift the nation as a whole.
“At this juncture, we implore all parties involved to put aside any hindrances, whether perceived or real, that might hinder a swift resolution. By doing so, we would not only serve the best interests of our nation but also pave the way for a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria,” Dr. Ojinmah passionately stated.
