Nigerian singer Chike has sparked conversation with his recent claim that the Apple Music Nigeria charts are frequently manipulated, alleging that many songs in the Top 10 and Top 20 are boosted through paid promotions. Speaking on the podcast Curiosity Made Me Ask, hosted by content creator Bae U Barbie, Chike described how artists can pay to boost their music’s visibility on the streaming platform.

“Your Top 10 and Top 20 on Apple Music is rigged… Not all the time, to be fair, but most times,” Chike stated, explaining that paid promotions often play a significant role in song rankings. He noted that while not every top song on the charts is manipulated, the practice is widespread.

Chike highlighted the intense competition in the industry and the growing emphasis on visibility, which he believes motivates some artists to pay for chart placements. “If you don’t take it to people, they might not really see it,” he explained, acknowledging the promotional pressures artists face. He added, “Right now, if I want to be top 10 on Apple Music, I can tell my guys ‘okay please spend $30,000’ and we will go to top 10. But then it’s not real.”

He clarified that while not all artists resort to these measures, the prevalence of paid boosts has made it challenging for musicians to compete based solely on merit.
