Israel Adesanya, the New Zealander-Nigerian mixed martial artist and current UFC Middleweight champion, says Nigeria is a “very corrupt place.”
He said this during an appearance on the Hut Boxin’ audiovisual podcast.
Despite professing his love for Nigerians, Adesanya highlighted numerous “red flags” about the country.
Adesanya pointed out that the Nigerian leaders are desperate to loot public funds, stating that “everyone [is] trying to find a way to siphon money.”

This statement is particularly notable given that Adesanya recently donned the Nigerian flag as he defeated Alex Pereira via knockout at UFC 287 on April 9, 2023, to reclaim his Middleweight title.
The fight with Pereira earned Adesanya a staggering $3.18 million, making it his highest-ever payout. This figure also places him as the third current highest-paid UFC fighter, behind Conor McGregor and Jon Jones.
