Aubrey Plaza Absent from Golden Globes After Husband’s Tragic Death

Aubrey Plaza was notably absent from Sunday night’s Golden Globes ceremony, just two days after the heartbreaking death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena.

The star-studded event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills saw numerous celebrities gather for the 82nd annual awards show, but Plaza was understandably not in attendance. She had been scheduled to present an award, though it remains unclear who stepped in for her.

Tragedy struck on Friday morning when authorities responded to a call at a Los Angeles-area residence. Baena, 46, was found deceased by an assistant. Law enforcement has since confirmed his death was the result of suicide.

Baena was a talented filmmaker, known for directing movies such as Life After Beth and Horse Girl. He also co-wrote the cult classic comedy I Heart Huckabees.

Tributes to Baena poured in over the weekend. Actress Molly Shannon shared a touching series of photos on social media, captioning them with a broken heart emoji. Baena was also mentioned during the Golden Globes ceremony, with The Brutalist director Brady Corbet honoring him in his acceptance speech.

Baena and Plaza married in a private ceremony in 2021, a moment the actress later described as a lowkey celebration during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.

Born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1940, Michael Cole entered the entertainment industry in the mid-1960s, taking on roles in television and film that showcased his talent. Early appearances included parts in Gunsmoke, The Bubble, and Chuka.

However, it was his portrayal of Peter “Pete” Cochran, an undercover officer on ABC’s The Mod Squad, that catapulted him to fame. Running from 1968 to 1973, the show starred Michael alongside Peggy Lipton and Clarence Williams III. The groundbreaking series, focused on youthful, countercultural crimefighters, earned critical acclaim and cemented Cole’s place in Hollywood history.

After The Mod Squad, Michael Cole remained a fixture on television, with appearances in popular series such as Wonder Woman, The Love Boat, CHiPs, Murder, She Wrote, and the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s It. His film credits include the 2008 TV movie Grave Misconduct, which marked his final on-screen performance.

Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing has issued a public apology to the Theater Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners of Nigeria (TAMPAN) and its president, Bolaji Amusan, known as Mr. Latin, for past criticisms that sparked a prolonged feud between her and the association. The dispute originated in 2021 when Nkechi and fellow actress Iyabo Ojo openly condemned TAMPAN’s handling of the Baba Ijesha child abuse case, a stance that stirred backlash within the industry.

In support of the alleged victim, Nkechi and Iyabo took to social media, speaking out against Baba Ijesha’s alleged actions. This move led to clashes with TAMPAN members, notably actors Yomi Fabiyi and Lege Maimi, who disagreed with their approach. In response, veteran actor Jide Kosoko, representing TAMPAN’s leadership, imposed a directive barring directors from working with the two actresses, a decision Nkechi openly mocked at the time.

In a video circulating online, she was seen kneeling before Mr. Latin, microphone in hand, expressing sincere regret for her past remarks. The gesture was widely interpreted as an effort to mend relationships and close a chapter on the contentious issues.
