Omowunmi, the widow of late Nigerian singer and rapper Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has agreed to a DNA test to establish the paternity of their son, Liam. The agreement follows a suit filed by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, requesting a court-ordered DNA test to confirm his grandson’s lineage.

A statement from the family’s legal representative, Monisola Odumosu, revealed that Omowunmi had consented to the test after extensive negotiations. The court proceedings at a Lagos Magistrate’s Court in Ikorodu on July 9, 2024, encouraged both parties to resolve the matter outside the courtroom, but initial attempts to serve Omowunmi with the court papers failed. With negotiations ultimately resulting in a mutual settlement, the court formally adopted the terms as its ruling.

Odumosu explained that Omowunmi agreed to have the DNA test conducted in a certified medical facility within Lagos or another reputable hospital if required. Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, accepted responsibility for all costs, including medical, legal, and administrative fees involved in the testing process.

“The respondent, Wunmi Aloba, consented to submit herself and her son for the DNA test at two accredited medical facilities within Lagos or another agreed location outside Lagos. The applicant, Mr. Joseph Aloba, will bear all associated costs, from test fees to sample collection and administrative expenses,” Odumosu confirmed.

The court also appointed officers to monitor the testing process to ensure the results are credible. In addition, the court ordered each party to cover its own legal costs, except for the DNA test costs, which will be borne entirely by Mohbad’s father.

The death of Mohbad at age 27 has drawn significant public interest, particularly surrounding the circumstances that led to his passing. His former record label, Marlian Music, owned by Naira Marley, has been at the center of controversy since the artist’s departure in February 2022. Following Mohbad’s death, the Lagos State Police Command assembled a special investigation team to examine the case, which resulted in the arrest of Naira Marley, socialite Sam Larry, and other individuals.

The case has attracted international observers, who recently expressed concerns over delays and alleged biases in the inquest into Mohbad’s death. The observers raised issues about adjournments and constraints they said could obstruct justice.
