Minister Sadiya Farouk Highlights Significance of Youth Empowerment for National Progress
Promoting Youth Empowerment: Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Calls for Collaborative Efforts

Abuja, Nigeria – In a recent empowerment event organized by the Citizens’ Health Education and Development Initiative (CHEDI), Mrs. Sadiya Farouk, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, emphasized the critical role of youth empowerment in national development. The event, held on Tuesday in Abuja, saw the participation of 60 young individuals who were provided with various opportunities for growth and development.

Representing the minister, Mrs. Helen Ikem, Assistant Chief Social Welfare Officer at the ministry, conveyed Farouk’s message, stressing the significance of empowering the youth and acknowledging them as the foundation of any nation. She emphasized that empowering the youth fosters a sense of responsibility and leadership, enabling them to better understand and address the practical challenges faced by society.

Farouk stated, “Over time, numerous youth empowerment programs have been launched because it has become evident that empowering young people strengthens the nation.” She further highlighted that a society becomes more secure when its youth are empowered, as they possess the passion, dedication, and initiative required to make positive contributions. Rather than waiting for authorities to solve problems, empowered youth take practical steps to address them independently.

The minister underscored the pivotal role of youth empowerment in the Federal Government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, particularly through the National Social Investment Poverty Alleviation Program. Farouk mentioned key initiatives such as N-Power, which offers vocational training opportunities for youths, and the Government Enterprise Empowerment Program (GEEP), which supports business development and eradicates poverty. Additionally, she highlighted programs like Conditional Cash Transfer, aimed at micro-level traders, and the Homegrown School Feeding Program, designed to enhance school enrollment and prepare children for a brighter future.

Expressing her appreciation, Farouk commended CHEDI for complementing the government’s efforts in providing developmental support to young individuals. She emphasized the significance of collaboration in creating a safer and better society for all.

The minister advised the beneficiaries of the program to assist their peers in building essential skills and achieving financial independence. This collaborative approach will empower more individuals and contribute to a thriving society.

During the event, Mrs. Selina Enyioha, Executive Director of CHEDI, revealed that the beneficiaries were selected from the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa State, and Niger. She explained that the organization traditionally focused on empowering women, children, and girls but had decided to include young people this year due to the alarming rates of youth unemployment in the country. According to the 2022 National Bureau of Statistics report, youth unemployment in Nigeria stands at approximately 53.40%, translating to over 80 million unemployed Nigerian youths. The CHEDI program specifically targeted unemployed graduates with training in fields such as tailoring, barbershop management, and hairdressing.

In a show of support, Ms. Zara-Binta Goni, Senior Social Development Specialist and World Bank Staff Representative, assured the attendees that the World Bank would continue to support youth and women empowerment initiatives. She emphasized that the World Bank, as a significant source of funding and knowledge for developing countries, is committed to reducing poverty, promoting shared prosperity, and supporting sustainable development. Goni expressed gratitude for the resources and support received from World Bank staff, highlighting the institution’s dedication to inclusion and empowerment.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to empowering the youth and promoting their active participation in the nation’s development. With the government, NGOs, and international institutions working together, Nigeria aims to create a brighter future for its young population, ensuring their potential is realized and contributing to the nation’s overall progress.
