It was reported that Michael Achimugu, who claimed to be a former aide to Atiku, recently made some allegations of corruption against him (Atiku).

He alleged that Atiku used Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) to siphon public funds when he served as vice president between 1999 and 2007.

SPV, according to trade finance global, is used to break down the risk associated with a pool of assets held by a parent company. These are legal entities created by a parent company to isolate the financial risk of certain assets, projects, or ventures.

Mr Achimugu also released audio records of discussions between him and Atiku, in which the latter was admitting to creating SPVs to hide slush funds.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council then asked the law enforcement agencies to arrest and prosecute Abubakar for alleged corruption based on the audio.

However, the Atiku campaign team denied the allegations and accused the ruling party of sponsoring Mr Achimugu to make the allegations.

Speaking during a recent interview on BBC Atiku said the audio disclosed nothing new.

“All that I know, all corrupt practices or corrupt allegations against me have been investigated in this country more than anybody else and nothing was found against me,” he said.

Asked if the voice in the leaked audio recording is his, Abubakar responded “that audio has disclosed nothing new”.
