Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) joined forces with the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) and the State Task Force to take strict action against illegal buildings and fences in Banana Island and its surrounding areas. This initiative comes as a response to the directives issued by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to address the issue of non-compliant structures.
Under the leadership of Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of LASBCA, a comprehensive operation was carried out resulting in the re-sealing of 12 buildings and the demolition of two illegal fences. These structures were targeted due to a range of violations, including lack of proper approvals, failure to obtain authorization from LASBCA to commence construction, and the unauthorized breaking of government seals, among other infractions.
Gbolahan Oki emphasized that the ongoing removal and sealing of buildings in Banana Island, as well as throughout the entire state, is part of a larger effort to enforce compliance and restore order in the construction sector. This action aims to ensure that all building projects adhere to the necessary regulations and guidelines, thereby maintaining safety standards and preventing future incidents.
The urgency to address these issues was further fueled by a recent tragic incident where a seven-storey building, still under construction, collapsed in Banana Island, claiming the life of one person. Governor Sanwo-Olu, deeply concerned about public safety, personally visited the site for an on-the-spot inspection. As a result, he promptly ordered the suspension of all construction activities in Banana Island and its environs until further notice.
The collaboration between LASBCA, LASPPPA, and the State Task Force highlights the government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens. Through these joint efforts, the authorities aim to instill a culture of compliance within the construction industry, ensuring that all building projects follow the necessary protocols and adhere to approved plans.
